Nick T., a participant in St. Coletta’s Supported Employment Program, steps up to the challenge
Speed, precision and a friendly smile were on full display earlier this month as Nick T., a dedicated employee at the Orland Park Jewel-Osco and a participant in St. Coletta’s Supported Employment Program, took on a high-energy bagging competition.
On March 8, the Jewel-Osco on 159th Street in Orland Park hosted baggers from 22 stores, including Woodstock and Blue Island, for a fast-paced test of skill and customer service. Competitors had just 20 minutes to showcase their efficiency, technique and professionalism -- all under the watchful eyes of store managers.
Nick, who has been a valued team member since last August, rose to the challenge, bagging groceries for eight customers within the time limit. While he didn’t take home the title, he gained an unforgettable experience, a certificate of participation and a sense of camaraderie.
“It was a fun experience,” said Nick. “Everybody was happy and supported each other.”
Nick’s job coach, Jeanine Rosell from St. Coletta’s of Illinois, attended the event and said she’s been amazed by his progress.
“In just seven months at Jewel, Nick has made tremendous strides. I’ve seen firsthand how his confidence has grown and how he’s embraced new challenges,” said Rosell. “His success is a testament to his hard work and the power of a supportive workplace.”
The bagging competition wasn’t just about speed -- it was a celebration of dedication and teamwork. Baggers across the region put their skills to the test, proving that great customer service is just as important as quick hands and a well-packed grocery bag.
Nick’s manager encouraged him to participate after seeing his enthusiasm on the job.
“I wanted to get the experience,” said Nick. “It was something for me to do and show my skill level.”
As the clock ticked down, competitors pushed through the challenge. For Nick, those 20 minutes felt like an eternity—but in the end, he walked away with more than just a certificate. He gained confidence, experience and the support of an entire community.
St. Coletta’s of Illinois proudly supports individuals like Nick in meaningful employment that highlights their abilities and contributions. His participation in this competition exemplifies the power of inclusion in the workplace and the rewards of stepping outside one’s comfort zone.
